Quantitative and histological evaluations for the potentiality of pilocarpine on tramadol induced xerostomia and structural alterations in Rats parotid gland

Tramadol is a centrally acting analgesic with weak opioid agonist properties, which also has monoaminergic activity, exerted via inhibition of neuronal uptake serotonin and norepinephrine. generally well tolerated the most common adverse events are nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, sweating, vomiting dry mouth. The effect intraperitoneal injection tramadol pilocarpine were studied in rats on flow saliva, histological histochemical change parotid salivary gland. divided into three groups, first group, received saline used as control. second group treated 10 mg hydrochloride for days. third days followed 1 pilocarpine. sacrificed at fourth day after end experimental procedure. administration caused decreased rate by approximately 60 %. histopathological changes include vacuolation atrophy acini excessive widening interstitial tissue area replaced extensive fibrosis mostly associated degenerated ducts their inflammatory cells.
